Ten

The Boomerang screamed over Africa, burned across an expanse of blue water, and vaulted skyward over the Indian subcontinent. River turned a loop around the Himalayas and wavered there.

Eli frowned at the window. Earth tilted below him. “Where’s the Ulysses?”

“She is holding a position over the Swiss Alps,” Jood told him. “She seems reluctant to descend any lower.”

“What the hell is she waiting for?” Eli muttered. “Why doesn’t she deploy the weapon?”

Beyond the cockpit window, thousands of ships floated through the atmosphere to land on the planet. They extended their outriggers and landing gear like any other ordinary Squadrons ships.

“Hail her,” Eli barked.

“Communications established.”

“What’s the problem, Sam?” he called into the intercom. “Detonate the weapon. Detonate it now before the crabs overrun the whole—”

“We can’t, Eli!” she yelled back.

“Why not?” he demanded. “Did the Grenade suffer any damage in the attack?”

“It’s Paulson!”

Eli stiffened. “What about him?”

“He was in the brig when the Squadrons took over the ship, but they needed him to overhaul the stability transmission catalyzer. They took him out of the brig and set him to work. While they weren’t looking, he accessed the database, hoping to get some evidence from our logs of the Grenade’s existence. He found that schematic you stole from the Yora Satellite.”

Eli ground his teeth in annoyance. “Is this going somewhere, Sam? We’re short on time, in case you hadn’t noticed.”

“The Grenade has to be deployed against exposed Mysterium tissue,” she screeched. “We have to wait for the crabs to come out on the surface. They have to leave their ships and get down on the ground. The weapon won’t work on them otherwise.”

Eli spun his chair around and raised his eyebrows at Jood. The Xynnar only tilted his head to one side in a curious manner. “Interesting.”

Eli sniffed. “Fine. It looks like they’re coming out now.”

Down on the ground, a huge destroyer with its Squadrons insignia proudly displayed extended two ramps from her port flank. They breezed to the ground, and hordes upon hordes of hideous, jointed insects swarmed from her hull. They spread over the planet in a black tide that darkened whole continents.

Bile stung Eli’s throat at the sight of them. Tens of thousands, millions, maybe billions of those things, poured from ships all over the planet. Their armored alien bodies obliterated the green fields and snow-capped mountains of Earth.

Eli cringed lower in his seat. “How long do we have to wait before we can deploy it?”

“I would trust Paulson to…” Jood glanced down. “The Ulysses is moving into position. She is assuming a flight pattern over Estonia. The forward cannonade is powering up. She is activating the Grenade.”

Eli bared his teeth at the Mysterium teeming all over his precious planet. They didn’t have a clue what was about to hit them. “Sayonara, fuckers.”

At that moment, a brutal smatter of gunfire echoed across the Black Sea, and a ship screamed past the Boomerang on a collision course for the Ulysses. Eli caught one glimpse of the Nautilus before she clobbered the Ulysses from starboard.
